Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam

The Rembrandt House, officially the Museum Het Rembrandthuis, is one of the most important cultural sights in Amsterdam. The monumental building on Jodenbreestraat was Rembrandt van Rijn’s home and workplace from 1639 to 1658. In this house, he painted some of his most famous works and lived during a period of both great success and financial hardship. Today, the house is furnished as a museum and offers visitors a unique insight into the life of the artist in the 17th century.

History of the Rembrandt House

The Rembrandt House was built in 1606 and is located in what was once a fashionable neighborhood of Amsterdam. Rembrandt purchased the house at the height of his career, but due to his expensive lifestyle and declining income, he fell deeply into debt. In 1656, he was forced to declare bankruptcy and the house was sold. Thanks to a detailed inventory list from that time, the interior was later reconstructed as authentically as possible. The Rembrandt House museum displays, among other things, Rembrandt’s studio, his living quarters, and an extensive collection of etchings.
